Case study and website re-design for Kingston Ontario's Pan Chancho Bakery & Cafe

The Case/ Problem

Pan Chancho is a family-owned Bakery, Cafe, and Catering service is located at the heart of Kingston, Ontario. They make everything from scratch, "using the freshest ingredients and locally sourced products". They offer a European-style bakery serves everything from artisanal breads, pastries, cakes, desserts; gourmet grab and go deli items; local farm produce; and have recently introduced their own line of canned goods and frozen meals.

As Pan Chancho has become a hot spot for locals, students, and tourists, as well as a Heritage Landmark in Kingston, I believe their website should give viewers the same sense of authenticity, familiarity, and quality from what they would experience at the store.

The current website is in no means distasteful, however, I wanted to see what I could do to truly capture what Pan Chancho is really about-

"A family owned and operated local favourite, an adventure for the senses"

in Pan Chancho's main landing page.

The User

We have three personas that stand out:

  1. The Locals

  2. The Tourists

  3. The Event Planners

  • The Locals: These are the families who live in Kingston and visit Pan Chancho weekly for family brunch and stocks up on fresh groceries. These users know the weekly hours and menu off the back of their hand, but would visit the website to check out the new product offerings and weekly produce that are in the store that week. Even though these users know the hours, they like to be able to find and access the contact information of the restaurant so they can place orders of their favourite restaurant easily.

  • The Tourists: These tourists want to have the ultimate Kingston experience. An early-morning walk by the lake, a visit to City Hall, and a stroll downtown. A day like this calls for an authentic meal at a restaurant recommended by Trip Advisor. But what kind of food does this restaurant serve? The Tourists would want to quickly search up what the restaurant has to offer. A good website that truly shows the restaurants style and feel could make or break these Tourist's decision to trust Trip Advisor.

  • The Event Planners: The Event Planners need someone to cater their event. They need food that people in the event will enjoy and remember, without going over-board on price. Whether its for a wedding, conference, or private function, the Event Planners are time constrained and need to be able to access catering prices, menu, service details, and contact information easily, or its on to the next catering service.
